Chapter 19

Private Jet

T he jet was exactly the type of plane Taylor would have imagined for Gabriel. From the outside, it was just a small plane. He had been on them before for short trips to places without much traffic. The buzz of the propellers was always annoying, but worth the ease of travel. This plane looked the same as he and the others handed their baggage to the people working with the plane to load into the belly of the small machine.

They climbed the stairs through the hatch, and Taylor’s eyes widened. Yes, this was exactly what he had imagined.

There was a small wall portioning off a space for the flight attendants, then it opened into more of a room than a cabin. Instead of the usual rows of cramped seats, the space was luxurious, with large, plush chairs well-spaced in the small area, pairs of the comfy chairs facing each other in a cluster of four with to additional two chairs facing the front. Exactly six, and it was a good thing planes this size existed. Each chair had a table built into the arm, but not in a way that would be obtrusive. In the wide aisle between the chairs, two people waited in crisp uniforms.

To his surprise, neither were demonborn. Maybe it was too dangerous trusting the demonborn right now, since they would be swayed by their demons. Still, it was unusual to trust the humans like this.

They both bowed, and gestured to the seats.

“Please stow your remaining items for takeoff,” the woman said. “You’ll be able to get them once we’re in the air.”

Tasha stepped forward. In her current outfit and with her black irises that could pass for very dark human eyes, she looked like an ordinary demonborn, not an actual demon. The humans likely wouldn’t realize that the mark on her wrist was black, as was Kaitlin’s, and even if they did, they would have no idea what it meant. Would they face additional scrutiny in the demonborn society? Maybe, but maybe Tasha would escape the kind of prejudice Taylor had met on his last plane trip.

“We need to speak with the pilot,” she said politely. “Are they in the cockpit?”

The flight attendant nodded. “I’m sure you can knock. She’s just getting the plane ready.”

Indeed, he could feel the plane revving to life as the air came on in the cabin. The door to the outside sealed shut and the other flight attendant went to check it. Taylor had no idea what flight attendants did to make sure the plane was ready to go, but the man was bustling around just out of view on the other side of the partition.

Tasha took Gabriel’s arm and looked at Taylor. “We’ll get settled here. Gabriel, why don’t you talk to the captain.”

He nodded, and felt a flash of confusion from Gabriel. He still didn’t fully understand how plane worked, but it was important that they vet the pilot. While the woman wouldn’t do anything in the air, she might take them somewhere else, into danger, if she wasn’t on their side.
